Sock Puppets NC HB2
Sending North Carolina some sock-filled love.
While this issue obviously hits home for us in the LGBT community, that also makes it easy for people outside of the community to brush off this law’s passing as simply “unfortunate.” It’s worth pointing out that even beyond the unreasonable and unforgivable slight against human rights, this issue shows a great deal of abuse of legislative force for what can only be personal prejudices at great cost to the state of North Carolina. There are so many layers to this issue that need to be dealt with, but it hits home in such a personal way for me that I’m venting and putting it down for today. On to the next fight, on to making things better for the LGBT community in the future.

I would like the 1890s back
Will it take another generation to reach equality? Two? I worry that with some religions gaining numbers, this will continue to be a problem for decades.
With each generation seemingly getting progressively dumber, I’m not sure we ever will.

As someone who only just moved to North Carolina a little over a year ago AND firmly rooted themselves by starting a business/committing to rent and other obligations for said business…I am quite pissed.
I hoped this state (as a purple state) would move the right way, not turn into that statistic of a state that does everything possible to slide backwards from progress.
And now Mississippi is making North Carolina look progressive. Wonderful. I wonder how many of these laws can get passed before someone calls an adult?
Tennessee is trying to pass that stupid bathroom bill too. Idiocy.

I’m in Indiana and I really hope that this bill doesn’t give Mike Pence any ideas.
But I thought they just hug you real hard all over until you turn into mush and then swallow you whole? And then some time later they chuck up all your hair and bones.
I live and have always lived in NC. Everywhere I’ve visited outside of the country either didn’t gender the bathrooms or usually didn’t have women’s unless it was in a tourist area/airport. And people were fine? I don’t understand why (generally speaking) Americans have to feel self entitled to things that didn’t so much matter to them until the media made a big deal out of it. If it had been “for the elderly/disabled” (women’s bathrooms have a line and men’s don’t, and elderly women have bladder problems usually; disabled people who need help getting in & out of chair by possibly someone of the opposite gender) instead of “to make transgender people more comfortable” (how cis people view it) there would have been a different reaction.
On a lighter note — having shitty politicians doesn’t mean NC is an awful place to visit. Just better to visit than actually live in… but better living in than certain other states too, you feel?
Remember…our super smart leaders (that probably got their learnin’ in this state that’s ranked 3rd worst in the country for education) also seem to think that creating a wind farm would shift our winds and make storms worse. If I wasn’t worried about the risk of getting arrested, I’d waltz into a men’s bathroom just to see the havoc ensue. We moved to this state with the prospect of affording our first home and land…now with what’s going on, the economy is going to crash and my home’s value is going to tank. Haven’t lived in NC for a full year yet and I’m super disappointed…

I suspect the average person voting for this has never sat down, and truly met a transgendered person. Their impression seems to be “guy with a badly fitting wig” or “girl with a sock.” …it is also, apparently, being funded primarily by one group, titled: “Alliance Defending Freedom.” Their president is Alan Sears. Yes, that Alan Sears.
I know I’m being a total weirdo for commenting a two month old comic, but I have a lot of intense feelings about the issue.
I live in NC, and it was a special shock for me to hear about HB2. To an asexual lesbian living in a pretty liberal and progressive town, it felt disgusting, and my love of my home state has plummeted. I’ve lived here for most of my life, and while things aren’t perfect, most people in my area are pretty accepting. The local university and school district have come out against HB2, and the school I go to is establishing neutral gender bathrooms. Riding the bus through my town, I see gay, transgender, bisexual, asexual, and genderqueer pride flags hanging from the streetlights. So from the responses I’ve seen from a huge amount of other NC residents, I can say that a large majority of North Carolina is adamantly against HB2. Basically, we hate our state government too for being transphobic, homophobic assholes, and would happily help throw Pat McCrory into a dumpster of angry weasels.
