Re-reading this hit my heart so hard now that I’ve been in this position, in terms of both losing a beloved kitty and being “picked.” Almost two years ago, I lost my 18-year-old orange tabby to CKD complications. I’d gotten him as a kitten while in middle school, so he’d been with me for so many major milestones of my life (plus my first severe depressive episode and the start of COVID). My heart still breaks whenever I think of him.
When I started checking shelters after he passed, I was pretty sure I wasn’t ready for another orange tabby. Then I met Fawkes (then called Jack Skellington!), who is a medium-hair marbled orange tabby. I originally arranged to meet just his brother, but agreed to meet him as well on a whim (they were being cared for by a foster parent with a local cat rescue network). Fawkes was the first of the kitties I’d met to immediately snuggle into my arms. The foster was actually a little surprised because he’s very shy (even today he’s wary of new people).
There will always be a hole in my heart from losing Kenshi, but Fawkes has helped immensely in easing the pain and making my world a little brighter.
I’ve always enjoyed your comics, and somehow it’s a little comforting knowing that others understand the heartache of losing a companion and then receiving the opportunity to give a home to another. Thank you.
