I’ll admit it: I’ve always had a particularly soft spot for strange (but true) trivia, and nature goes out of its way to provide an endless source for that need. One of the highlights of my childhood vacations was getting a chance to visit a (the?) Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum in Myrtle Beach (land of the minigolf course, where shells with googly eyes roam free), which was exactly as kitschy and hokey as you can possibly imagine.
Word to the wise: that mirror they provide you with to try tongue tricks? Don’t trust it. God damn it, don’t trust that stupid thing.

As a disclaimer, I actually love birds to an unhealthy degree and don’t generally think they’re all stupid (okay, mourning doves are pretty damned dense). Still, even given certain species’ complex language and signals, you have to admit: when they’re shouting from a distance, they don’t come across as subtle. In fact, I’m not too sure you can’t hear the very same words being shouted at your nearest college campus…
