Every two hours on the dot one of my fiance’s cats darts into a corner, stares up the wall at nothing, mrowls aggressively and darts out of the room only to run back and forth like a freaking cartoon character in the hallway for 10 minutes and then return calmly like none of that ever occurred. She does this daily with the exception of nighttime (THANK GOD but then she chooses to cry nonstop at random intervals all over the house so I’m really not sure if that’s better). Cats are freaking insane (also she and your grey one could be twins, she’s a Russian Blue and we unironically call her Gris-Gris and she always wants love but will get pissy and hiss at you if you try to give her any).
That’s not insanity, it’s a classic sign of a cat that is not getting enough stimulation during the day. She needs to be taking that energy out on toys and play, so you might want to invest in more feather wands and wear her out with walls or said toys.
Gosh, I love the way you draw Peter. I have a white bobtail who acts exactly like him (clumsy, sweet, and oblivious) and a pissy grey and white cat JUST like Konstantin (loves people, hates cats and has an angry, jutty chin). All of your cat comics have been right on the nose. They just did this about 20 minutes ago (which is why I am awake). I rescue and have 6 other foster cats with various personalities and I ask myself the same question sometimes. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world and love finding them great homes! <3
And, yep — that’s consistent with our kitty-behavior, too — except Bastian, our flame-point who looks a bit like Peter, is playing the Gigi role . . . and Zuul, our grumpy grey older cat, has a fluffy low-hanging belly that sways back and forth when she runs. We refer to it as “the chub-udder.” She is majestic and dignified.
(She’s actually at a much healthier weight than she used to be — yay for automated feeders that allow you to set the quantity exactly! — but we think she and her brother may have some Egyptian Mau heritage somewhere in the distant past, because she has a Mau-like spotted coat . . . and they have a little apron of skin that covers their back feet when they sit down. She’s lost 5 pounds and is down to 13.5, which is within a pound of lean and muscular Bastian . . . but she’s still a very round little cat.)
Ugh, great question. I’m taking care of an abandoned Siamese (possibly adopting him permanently) and this adorable moron is the loudest cat ever. Especially at 3AM when he’s busy knocking everything over and chewing through my phone cable. So. Tired. How do people have children.
My roommate’s cat had a habit; every single time my roommate came home from work, the cat would start meowing and meowing and ten minutes in, do laps into their bedroom and out into the living room, in this wonky figure eight track that only Ekko would know. My roommate had to explain to me multiple times it was just a thing that some cats did naturally. I always thought it was neat.
This is my every morning, oh gosh! Except we decided to name our cats after PG Wodehouse characters, so they do this and also they feel extra entitled.
I’ve always felt that we adopt cats because we don’t have enough chaos in our lives. I think it’s *WEIRD AS HELL* that a comic called “Chaos Life” asked that question, and my go-to answer for years includes “Chaos” and “Life.”
And… all three are indoor cats? Blimey, our cat escaped three times when she had to be kept in for two weeks, and drove us insane the entire time. I am in awe of you.
Yep! Here in American suburbs, it’s generally not safe to let cats roam outdoors (though lots of people do); there have been many studies that show outdoor cats in America have an average lifespan of 4.7 years, compared to indoor cats’ 13-17.
Luckily, Peter has never shown any interest in leaving, Jiji has yet to show any desire — I think he had his fill of it before the shelter found him — and Konstantin only likes to be in the roof garden if we’re with him (and he’s wearing a harness, which he’s less excited about). Even if one of us walks away from the window, he’ll come back inside to follow along. He used to be more excited about going out (harnessed) when he was a kitten, then one day he decided, “screw this,” climbed up my leg and cried until we got inside. Never wanted to go out since. His biggest escape goals these days are the public hallway of this apartment building, and that’s just because it’s a big, long, secret room to him.
Also, and I know I’m a bit behind here, but cats kept primarily or even mostly outdoors, along with inconsiderate pet owners who allow masses of cats to go feral, are absolutely devastating to songbird populations. F’r real, look up the numbers. You’ll become a lot more tolerant of keeping them inside.
You draw cats so well. ^^

I have to know, do you really have a Tea-Rex mug?
Did.. did you not see the link below the comic?
I’m actually not sure how I missed that!
Ask, and ye shall receive! http://society6.com/findchaos

Watching them chase each other is hilarity 😉

That’s my house times three plus one.
ah yes the entertainment known as the Catnapolis 500! Gentlemen start your engines! PURRRRRRR
yeah I have cats for the races 🙂
We call that “being a Thundercat” because of all the thunderous noise, as in “Why is Thorn being a Thundercat at 5am???”
“Tea-Rex”! Hahahahahahahaha!

Product placement in your own comic? That might be a new low 😉
Also, Overand has it exactly right, cats exist to shake up what would otherwise be a monotonous home life. For me, at least.
you don’t adopt cats…
cats choose their slaves…..

I love my Tea-Rex mug. Sometimes I even put coffee in it. It works, just the same.
How’s Haku doing?
I want that cup!
